TYPOGRAPHY POSTER

The goal for this assignment was to create a poster for a lecture series about contemporary design. Given the information I was presented, I had to create a poster purely through typography that included all necessary information, along with hierarchy between each element. The letters and words themselves made up the "imagery" of the poster. To start of this process, I practiced with type through a separate mini-project shown below.

After creating different samples of visual hierarchy through typography, it was now time to begin the main project.

FIRST DESIGN

When first working on this project, I focused heavily on building hierarchy. I primarily did this through making main headlines and titles large, while having the descriptions in a smaller font size. One problem I encountered was that the design felt too plain and simple. Since this was a poster for a contemporary design lecture series, I wanted the poster to reflect that. Although I kept the same fonts in my second design, I played around more with color and how I blocked off the different sections of information for each speaker.

FINAL DESIGN

I ended up choosing the colors green, orange and purple, as they were able to bring more contrast and color to the design. While purple and green are both cool colors, the orange added that warmth that I was looking for and focused on in the first design. All-in-all, I think the second poster is more likely to intrigue its main audience of designers and students, as it brings in a level of creativity and fun that my first design was lacking. Rather than having one big block of text, breaking up the content also allowed the design to have more movement.
